We wanted our attendees to get to know the incredible talent in the Artist Alley a little better, so we asked each of our artists to answer a couple questions about themselves and their art.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a fiber artist specializing in needle felting. I started needle felting 1 year ago as a way to deal with the passing of my dad. While not a full-time artist (working mother of 2) it is what I enjoy doing most.

What was the first thing you made/wrote/drew?
The first thing I made was a small owl in my needle felting class at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.

Tell us about your creative process, from the beginning of a typical piece to its completion?

The process of needle felting is somewhat like sewing, yet it is also like working with clay. I use both clay techniques and needling to shape the wool into the form I want.

Who or what are your influences?

Being someone who grew up in the 80’s a lot of my influences are from 80’s pop culture (Star Wars, Star Trek, The Neverending Story, Dark Crystal, Godzilla and anything Kaiju, etc.) But I am also influenced by what my kids are into these days (Pokemon, Miyazaki, Harry Potter, Neko Atsume, Yokai Watch, etc.). I love cuteness!

What plans do you have for the future of your art?
Eventually I would like to needle-felt an entire outfit or costume.

Do you have any good advice for emerging artists?

If you believe you can make anything, you will be able to make anything.

What do you hope people get out of you artwork/writing/etc?

When people look at my pieces they’ll say “That’s adorable!” (Cuteness again.) But eventually I want the creatures I make to be so realistic that they will make trophy hunting and taxidermy obsolete.

To date, what works of yours are most satisfied with?

I’d have to say that my luck dragon (from Neverending Story) is my crown jewel right now. It is over 2 feet long and took more than 18 hours to make. Each bead was sewn on by hand one at a time.
